Set your intention
Start a session by setting your intention — typing in a few words that express what you want to work on — and choosing how much time you want to spend. Your intention stays on your screen while you work, and every minute a gentle pulse effect helps you remember what you set out to do.
Start a new session
- Choose New Session… from the N₁₀ menu. The session window appears on-screen.
- Type in what you intend to work on. If you’re stuck, try answering the question: what’s one thing I can do right now?
- Click the timer menu to choose how long you want to work. You can stop or resume the session at any time.
Stop or pause a session
The session will end automatically when time is up. When the session ends, the session window disappears.
- Close the session window at any time to stop the session early.
- You can also stop the session by selecting Stop Session from the N₁₀ menu.
See how much time is left
The progress ring shows a visual representation of the session’s elapsed and remaining time.
- Hover your mouse over the progress ring to see how many minutes remain in the session.
- Or, open the N₁₀ menu when a session is active to see the remaining time.
Resume the last session
When you start a new session, N10 pre-fills the last session’s intention. To resume the session, leave the intention unchanged and select how much more time you want to spend from the timer menu.
Track your history
Use N10’s Session History window to browse past sessions, see your daily activity, and find sessions matching a specific string.
- From the N₁₀ menu, choose Session History.
Browse past sessions and see your daily activity
The Session History window shows one full month of sessions at a time.
- Use the Previous and Next buttons to move between months.
- A dot appears below each day on the calendar with session activity. Today’s date appears in a shaded circle.
- Sessions in the timeline appear in reverse chronological order.
- Consecutive sessions with the same intention appear grouped together as a single entry in the timeline.
- The total time spent appears below each session, rounded up to the next minute.
Search session intentions
You can find past sessions with intentions matching a specific string of text.
- From the Session History window, click the Find button. The search field appears.
- In the search field, type the exact text you want to find.
- As you type, sessions with intentions matching the search text appear in reverse chronological order.
- To return to the month view, clear the text from the search field.
Delete unwanted entries
If you no longer want to keep a session in Session History, you can delete it.
- In the Session History timeline, move the mouse over the session you want to delete.
- Click on the session while holding down the Control key on the keyboard. A contextual menu appears.
- Choose Delete from the menu. The session disappears immediately.
- To restore an accidentally deleted session, choose Undo from the Edit menu.
Change N10 settings
Set up N10 just the way you like it.
- From the N₁₀ menu, choose Settings.
Change the ring and pulse color
The Ring color setting lets you change the color of the session progress ring and pulse effect.
- By default, N10 uses the system accent color for this setting. To set the system accent color, open Apple menu > System Settings > Appearance.
- To use a different color, click the button representing that color.
Change the pulse frequency
The Pulse effect setting lets you control how often the pulse effect appears during a session.
- By default, N10 shows the pulse effect every minute until the end of the session.
- Choose Every 5 minutes to show the pulse effect at five minute intervals until the end of the session.
- Choose At the end of the session to show the pulse effect only when the session ends.
- Choose Never to disable the pulse effect entirely.
Turn the pulse sound on or off
By default, N10 plays a soft tone with every pulse.
- Uncheck the Play pulse sound setting to silence the pulse sound.
Configure where the N10 icon appears
The Show icon setting lets you hide the dock icon or the N10 menu.
- By default, the N10 icon appears both In the menu bar and dock.
- Choose In the menu bar if you want N10 in the menu bar but not in the dock.
- Choose In the dock if you want N10 in the dock but not in the menu bar.
Set whether N10 starts automatically
The Open N10 at login setting lets you start N10 automatically when you log in.
- To further configure which applications start automatically on your Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items.
